We Are What We Do

September 10, 2026 by Jess Powell

Bodies are a reflection of what we do and how we live. A dental professional’s workday requires them to have their shoulders and upper back rounded over a patient. Many professions, like contractors, electricians, and chefs, require the use of their dominant arm to complete repetitive motion. Artists sit at the wheel, rounded forward and legs pulled out from the hip, to create the perfect sculpture. Work-from-home and desk jobs have become the leading cause of shortened hip flexors, posterior pelvises, and loss of spinal curves. When muscles have to hold our body in specific positions for forty hours a week, it is not surprising that most of us are out of alignment.

What we do for a living has become our identity and the first thing people ask us during an introduction. As a postural alignment therapist certified from Egoscue University, I have over 10 years of practice looking at hundreds of bodies. I can identify occupations and lifestyles that have led to pain. When individuals stay in a profession for years at a time, their body becomes resistant to opposite movements if they are not doing targeted corrective exercise.

Below are the before photos of a client who came in with significant shoulder and neck pain, leading to radicular symptoms down the left arm. This client has 25+ years of rounding and contorting his body to fix cars.

After practicing the Egocue Method at our clinic the client was able to reduce the kyphosis and scoliosis leading to his cervical and shoulder pain.

Both shoulders are less rounded, the thoracic spine and cervical spine have increased extension, the forward head positioning has reduced, and the client has gained several inches of height.

Are you having shoulder and upper back pain caused by your alignment?
The body has an innate ability to heal when given the right stimulus.
