Back Pain

How long does it take to create pain relief when practicing The Egoscue Method?

December 28, 2022 by Lisa

Most of the clients we see are in pain. These clients come to us for relief with their knee pain, back pain, hip pain, and shoulder pain. Oftentimes, our clients have been to chiropractors, physical therapists, doctors, massage therapists, and acupuncturists that have been unable to create a lasting change with their muscle and joint pain. This can be challenging for our clients because their journey for pain relief has already taken weeks and months before we meet our clients for the first time.

In order to create lasting pain relief, as Postural Alignment Specialists that practice The Egoscue Method, we assess the muscular imbalances in their bodies. This begins through a complete health assessment and history to understand the patterns of movement (or lack of movement) that led to pain. We complete postural photos to see how their joint position aligns against a grid to understand how their joints are loading. This can reveal if an elevated shoulder and hip are leading to the back pain or if a forward head position is causing the shoulder pain. Finally, we complete a series of functional testing and gait analysis to determine what muscles are active or inactive that are resulting in muscular compensation and pain.

When our clients leave their first postural alignment session, they can expect to feel a change in their body. This often results in a decrease in pain. If a client’s body has compensated for years, they might notice feeling “lighter” or “straighter” after doing their Egoscue therapy exercises. This is a sign that their body is becoming more functional and balanced.

The work towards alignment and health takes time and effort. Our muscle memory begins to take effect in 90 days and is often the time our clients begin to notice less pain due to their enhanced alignment. Change is not always linear and might result in peaks and valleys. We encourage clients to remain focused on what is changing. Our cells and tissues are constantly adapting and we will continue to adapt new exercises and stimuli to create a change in the muscle structure. One of the great benefits of our bodies is that they are dynamic and constantly in motion. This is why the method works! Now, let’s get moving!

What’s Causing Your Back Pain??

July 12, 2019 by Lisa

When it comes to back pain, there is no classic case. Clients come to us with different reasons for their back pain including: muscle spasms, fusions, herniated discs, impinged nerves, spondylolysis, or scoliosis. All of these medical diagnoses are a result of a muscular imbalance. Although everyone’s back pain does not look the same, many of these patients have a something in common: a misaligned pelvis.

When the body is misaligned, it is forced to adapt just to function. This means that parts of our body are doing jobs that they were never meant to do. When the pelvis is tilted (anterior, posterior, elevated or rotated) it changes the curve of our spine. This is important because the curves of our spine are designed to absorb shock and prevent us from feeling pain!

So how do we fix this? By providing the body with the exercise or stimulus it needs, the alignment of the pelvis will slowly be restored. This will allow your pelvis to be balanced again in a neutral and functional position which restores the curve of the spine.

Getting your pelvis in the correct position is not where we stop. We have to train the muscles around the pelvis to continue to hold the correct position. If your pelvis is misaligned, it’s likely that your gluteal muscles, (those big muscles in your behind) are not working the way they were designed. By retraining those muscles to work as they were intended, we can help restore the stability to your pelvis, realign the spine and get rid of the back pain.

The beauty in restoring alignment and function to the body utilizing the Egoscue Method, is that it is lasting and preventative. As Egoscue therapists, we know that we are providing our clients with the tools they need to not only get out of pain, but also to prevent future issues!

SCOLIOSIS

June 1, 2017 by Lisa

At our clinic, we see several clients a week with scoliosis – a curvature of the spine.  Some people are born with scoliosis and for most it develops in puberty when the muscles can’t keep up with the bones during this intense period of growth.  This muscle imbalance is what pulls the spine into an unnatural curve.  Scoliosis can be very painful and without intervention can worsen.  Our clients with scoliosis have often  tried  everything including bracing, rounds of physical therapy  and even spinal surgery placing Harrington rods in the back in an attempt to correct the curve of their spine.  Despite these methods, they continue to have pain in their body caused by this muscular imbalance.

When Egoscue was developed, the idea was simple: activate muscles to pull the bones into an aligned position. When the body is given the correct stimulus, the muscles will pull the bones into a straight position. When the bones are aligned, the friction on our joints when we move will be decreased. Your spine is subject to the same rules!  By rebalancing the muscles of your back, your spine will load correctly and decrease the curve of scoliosis.

During the initial evaluation, your Egoscue therapist will analyze the curve of the spine by taking photos, palpating the joint position, and completing functional tests to see how the body obtains a specific movement. This will allow your Egoscue therapist to not only feel and see the curve, but also to determine which muscles are overworking and which are not doing enough to align your body and your spine correctly.  Your Egoscue e-cise menu will have a series of exercises designed to activate the specific muscle groups in your body that are needed to decrease the curve of your spine. When your body – including your spine – is aligned and symmetrical it will move with ease and without pain!

Back Pain

March 7, 2017 by Lisa

Last week a wonderful woman came to see me who has been struggling with extreme lower back pain for years. She has stenosis in her spine and has endured several injuries throughout her life. The pain in her back had gotten so bad that she couldn’t even walk without the back pain intensifying.

After evaluating her back pain, in order to see the response of the prescribed Egoscue program in her body, I asked her to walk after completing each stretch or position (E-cises). Watching her gait allowed me to see exactly how her body was responding and as importantly allowed her to feel the changes in her body.  Within ten minutes she had completed four Egoscue E-cises that encouraged the spine, shoulders, and pelvis to be in a better position. As she began to walk, she was overwhelmed with emotion. She couldn’t believe that her lower back didn’t hurt anymore!  This was the first time in years she did not have back pain.

Analyzing her gait, I could see that her shoulders were not as forward, she had increased range of motion in her hips, and she appeared lighter on her feet. As an Egoscue therapist, it is so exciting to see instant changes! While it doesn’t always happen this dramatically, when the E-cises are introduced the body changes.  Back pain is relieved.

In order to keep progressing toward a pain free body, these E-cises must become a way of life. You have to challenge the body as it evolves with new stimuli. You have to be dedicated. Doing the E-cises daily, even for as little as ten minutes, will benefit your body! Your back pain can be relieved.

For some people, the relief of back pain, shoulder pain, hip pain or knee pain might not happen in the first ten minutes, but over time the changes do add up and the pain retreats. The time and energy you’ve invested while doing your Egoscue program will decrease your pain and allow your body to function in the way that you desire! Walking, running, hiking, standing and sleeping without pain are within your reach! This result is emotional for our clients and for us.  Finally being pain free is life changing.  It’s what we do at Pain Free – we are here to help you realize the possibility of life without pain once and for all.

BACK PAIN

November 17, 2016 by Lisa

back-pain-picIf you have ever been faced with back pain, you will do anything for relief! You resort to injections, pain medication, even spinal fusion surgery…anything to stop the back pain.  But these options are all just masking the back pain, they are temporary.  To get lasting real results for your back pain, you must uncover the root of the problem – why do you have the back pain in the first place?

Our backs were designed to be flexible and able to carry weight. The time we spend sitting while working, studying, and relaxing greatly reduces the stimulus we are giving our body – and remember, our body is a stimulus response system.  This inactivity causes our back to loose full range of motion.  Muscles that do not move become muscles that cannot move. What happens? Back pain.

Back pain is a symptom of muscle imbalances over time. Your back pain could stem from something being off in the pelvis, over-contracted stomach muscles, or rounding of the upper back.  Whatever the imbalance, creating symmetry bilaterally and vertically restores proper alignment and your back pain is relieved!  That’s what we do at Pain Free Performance utilizing the Egoscue method.  Let us help you relieve your back pain.

BACK PAIN

May 24, 2016 by Lisa

If you suffer from back pain – the kind of back pain that can go from 0 to 100 in a flash – you innocently reach for something and your back goes into spasm – or you have chronic never-ending back pain that eats away at your work, your play, your sleep, your relationships and every aspect of your life. At best, your back pain is exhausting and debilitating.

I know, you have a diagnosis, your back pain has a name – you have a bulging disk, a herniated disk, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, maybe even a spinal fusion. I get it that you feel that you just have to suffer with the back pain that you were dealt.  Maybe you take some meds or get an injection or even contemplate surgery if you really want relief from your back pain.  Not so fast.

What we really need to do is stop the back pain before it begins. How do we do that?  First, we have to ask the question, what is the cause of your bulging disk, herniated disk, scoliosis, or spondylolisthesis?  With rare congenital exception, these are maladies that occur second-hand from misalignment elsewhere in the body.

That’s where we come in. To treat your back pain, we actually need to focus on your muscles, not just the bones in your spine.  The spine consists of 33 individual vertebrae that stack one on top of the other encasing the spinal cord. The muscles surrounding the spine – healthy and functional – are the real work horses helping to maintain the balance and erectness of the body.  It’s amazing.  However, if the muscles become inactive, weak or atrophied, other muscles begin compensating – the integrity of the spine becomes compromised – alignment is lost – your excruciating back pain is just one of the possible results.

As a Postural Alignment Specialist certified by Egoscue University, we can unravel the dysfunctions in your body that are causing your back pain and safely return you to a pain free lifestyle. Check out this video on back pain by Pete Egoscue to show you how we would begin that process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6pTC4JvMjc

The human body is amazing and has a miraculous natural ability to heal. Yes, even your back pain. Let us show you how at Pain Free Performance.

SCIATICA

January 18, 2016 by admin

Over the holidays, we’ve had a number of clients come in to the clinic with sciatic pain. This symptom can present in very different ways.  For some, it’s a painful sacro-iliac joint that stays in that one hip area and perhaps into the gluteal muscle.  Others will feel a twinge of pain in the hip and then a pain in the calf of the same leg.  The classic sciatic symptom is pain in the hip and all the way down the back of the leg.  At times, this pain can feel debilitating – if you have had that pain, you know what I mean.   Take a deep breath, there is hope without taking pain relievers or having back surgery.

The sciatic nerve is the main nerve that feeds all the other nerves through your legs. Think of it as the main electrical feed that comes out of your spine at the top of the sacrum goes through the pelvis and down the back of both your legs.  Where that nerve comes out of the spine (on either side) and crosses through the pelvis (either side) there is not a lot of clearance.  This makes it imperative that your pelvis is bilateral and symmetrical and your spine is equally bilateral and centered on top of the pelvis.

Sounds simple, right? Well it is and it isn’t.  The pelvis is 3 bones and they can be off in any of the 3 planes of movement and the spine sitting on top that can be off in those same 3 planes.  What holds all this in the proper position?  Muscles.   Lots of them.  And, they all need to work equally as a team.  In order to work as that team, they need a wide variety of movement.  More and more in our culture and environment, we are getting less movement and less variety of movement.

We think driving to the gym and doing a cross-training work out every day is enough. That is good, but nothing compared to what our bodies really need – we need to run, jump, twist, throw, climb, push and pull.  Ideally, we need to do these things for hours every day.  We are not meant to sit still.

Stand normally in front of a full length mirror and look to see where your feet and knees point. Your feet and knee position will tell you a lot about your hips.  If your knees and feet point straight ahead equally, then your pelvis is in a good position; if one or both of either your feet or knees point in different directions, possibly both halves of your pelvis is out of position.  You can change that with a bit of work and the right exercises to get the muscles working appropriately again.

That is what the Egoscue method is all about. It is what we do at Pain Free Performance.  Call us or come and see us and we can enable you to alleviate your sciatic pain.

Cart before the Horse

June 18, 2015 by admin

The Cart before the Horse….

The other day I got a call from a client who was in such excruciating back pain that she couldn’t make her appointment. She travels from quite a distance and she said she could not get comfortable enough to sit in the car that long. I spoke with her on the phone and gave her some e-cises to do. She called back about an hour later and her pain was significantly better.

When I asked her what she’d been doing before her pain began, I got an earful! She had been shaking out rugs, digging in the garden, mowing, cleaning her house for an upcoming event including a lot of up and down the stairs. When we talked about her Egoscue menu, she said she’d been doing well with it. I learned later that she had not done her Eogscue program before she started her busy and very physical day. Aha, therein lies the problem.

She should have done her Egoscue program BEFORE beginning her activities. Let me tell you why….

The sole purpose of performing an Egoscue program is to change the alignment of the body, creating a pain free body. When muscles aren’t working properly, after an injury or surgery for example, they become imbalanced. They either work too hard and become overly tight or don’t work at all and become loose. Muscles are responsible for keeping our bones in place so both scenarios cause the muscles to pull the bones out of alignment. This creates wear and tear on the joints and pain. Doing the individualized Egoscue program you are prescribed gets those muscles back to doing what they’re supposed to do, which puts the bones back where they belong. If my client had done her Egoscue prior to working so hard, her body would have been prepared – less wear and tear on the joints, less pain.

So, the very best way to enjoy your Egoscue and your new found alignment is to DO YOUR EGOSCUE MENU BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOUR ACTIVITIES! It is our goal to get you back to doing what you love and what you need to do! The body needs to be aligned before you start pushing it. It is the best way to avoid pain, avoid injury and begin to strengthen your alignment –not strengthen your dysfunction. Does that make sense?

So, put the horse (Egoscue) before the cart (your life’s activities) and make your Egoscue menu part of your early morning routine! Your body will thank you.
